In most of the websites/ portals, English is the medium of language. This has discouraged illiterates from active use of computers and imbibing its benefits.

In such a situation, the Government of Kerala took a leadership role , embarking on a new initiative with the objective of creating capacity and content in the local language, Malayalam. Malayalam Computing campaign is being led by the IT Department. KSITM, Akshaya and SPACE are the main implementing agencies of the Malayalam Computing campaign. This project helps the common man to derive more benefits from various Internet services.

The project has two broad objectives:
1. Strengthen local language, Malayalam, using the possibilities provided by Information and Communication Technologies.
2. Address the linguistic barrier which prevents the people of Kerala from tapping the new technologies.
