Thrissur

Short History

            Thrissur District is situated in the middle of Kerala; i.e. Malappuram and Palakkad Districts in the north, Palakkad district and Tamil Nadu State in the east. Eranakulam and Idukki Districts in the South and Arabian Sea in the West. Thrissur has an area of 3032 Sq. Km.

            The eastern part of Thrissur is covered by dense evergreen forests. Although it is an industrially progressive district, its economic base is Agriculture. The most important rivers of Kerala ie. Bharatapuzha and Periyar passes through the northern and southern boundaries respectively enhancing the water resources of the district. There are also Kecheripuzha, Karuvannoor puzha and Chalakudy puzha in addition to the pure water lakes of Enamakkal, Manakkodi and Muriad.

            The most important town of the district is Thrissur and it is also known as the cultural capital. Thrissur is the land of Pooram Festivals. “Thrissur Pooram” is world famous. The contribution of different religious institutions in the cultural field is unforgettable.

            The most famous Guruvayoor Temple, St.Thomas Church, Palayoor, Cheraman Juma Masjit, Kodungallur, Sri. Kurumba Devi Temple, Sree Koodalmanikya Temple, Sree Ramaswamy Temple of Thriprayar, Vadakkumnathan, Thiruvampadi and Paramekkavu Temples, all these contribute much to the religious and cultural unity of the district.

            Thrissur has many Tourist spots. Archeological Museum and Zoo, Vilangankunnu, Peechi Dam, Cheruthuruthy Kalamandalam, Athirappilly and Vazhachal, Saktan Thampuram Palace, etc. are some of those.
