Short History

           Pathanamthitta district was formed on November 1st 1982. The Pathanamthitta taluk and a major part of Kunnathur taluk of Kollam district, Thiruvalla taluk and parts of Mavelikkara and Chengannur and Peerumedu taluks joined together to form this district.

           The high land, Mid land, and low land include in this district. Soil and climatic condition are good for cultivation. Important crops are Coconut, Rubber, Paddy, Pepper and Tea.Kakki, Kallada and Maniyar Dams situated in this district.

           Socially, Educationally and Economically this district is in far front. There are several centers which attract tourists like Aranmula Uthrattathy Boat race, Aranmula Vasthuvidya Kendram, Aranmula metal mirror etc. The world famous pilgrim centre Sabarimala is in Pathanamthitta district. People participate in functions like Maramon Cherukolpuzha, Manjinikkara conventions and Chandanakkudam festival without considering their religions factors. The author of ‘Atcharya Choodamoni”, Sri.Sakthi Bhadra born in Kodumon in Pathananathitta.

           Idukki, Mavelikkara and Adoor parliamentary constituencies and Thiruvalla, Kallooppara, Arunmula, Pandalam, Adoor, Ranni and Konni assembly constituencies comprise in Pathanamthitta district. According to the 1991 census the literacy rate of this district is94.86% which is more than state average. As per the 2001 census Mallappally taluk is in the forefront of literacy in the state. The district which have the lowest birth rate is (3.2%) Pathanamthitta
