Kerala
Now
It is Onam season again. The celebrations fall from 11th September onwards. God’s own country will be awash then with colours, pageants joy and ballyhoo. Young and old, high and low and rich and poor regardless of sex and creed, will get newly robed, will feast and festoon and take part in umpteen Onam games and dances. Flower arrangement, rivaling ikebana, on the foreyards of houses and the boisterous spirit of collecting nature’s blooms for making this numen are believed to welcome back the mythical king, Mahabali. The mythical benevolence of Mahabali had presided over their prosperity, which unlike modern capitalism did not beget inequality. Onam is a throwback to those happy days of forgetting all the inequities, discriminations and enormities that dog us today. |
