The Organisation

Indian Institute of Handloom Technology-Kannur (IIHT-K), the nodal agency for imparting inputs of science and technology to traditional handloom and textile sector in Kerala, was established in 1987 under the Department of Industries, Govt, of Kerala. This Institute has come a long way from being a modest facility for offering need based Diploma/short term courses in Weaving, Dyeing and Fashion Technology etc. As IIHT-Kannur enter in its 25th year of inception, the institute bracing up for meeting the challenges and needs of the handlooms, textiles, fashion and garment industries for trained manpower through short term and long term training programmes including Diploma in Handloom and Textile Technology (DHTT) and Post Graduate Diploma in Fashion Designing(PGDFD).

The Governing body of the Institute is now headed by the Hon’ble Minister for Industries, Sri.P.K.Kunhalikutty as Chairman, Hon'ble Secretary, Industries Dept., Govt. of Kerala as Vice Chairman and Sri. Abdul Kareem Cheleri, Executive Director, as Member Convener. Governing Body consists the members from Government, Public sector institutions, AICTE and other constitutional bodies.

The Institute is situated in a premises of 4.13 acres of land at Thottada, enroute to National Highway from Kannur to Thalassery. The trainees and students find the calm and peaceful atmosphere of the campus, highly conducive for study and introspection.

Objectives

  • To arrange short and long term training programmes on Weaving, Dyeing, Designing, Printing of handloom fabrics.
    ?To undertake, aid, promote and co-ordinate research and development activities on all aspects of textile and fashion industry
    To publish research papers, books and periodicals and undertake and assist in the organisation of conferences, seminars, workshops and lectures in matters connected with the above.
    To establish and maintain libraries including Fabric/ Screens/ Blocks/ Literature etc.
    To provide laboratory facilities for testing, raw materials, consumables and finished goods etc.
    To conduct short term courses on management, productivity, allied subjects etc. for the benefit of the managerial persons and supervisory staff employed in the textile and fashion industry.
    To work in collaboration with other institutions, organization, associations and societies established for the development of handloom textile and fashion industry.
