During the formation of theÂ department, boat service operations were only in the districts of Alappuzha,Kollam, akottayam & Ernakulam. But later the department could start its operation in the districts of kannur & Kasargod also.Now the operational area is therefore in 6 districts,Earlier, all the activities were centralised in the Directorate alone. But later, for administrative convenience. a decentralisation was introduced by starting offices,In Ernakulam region,Changanacherry and Payyannur headed by Senior Superintendents.A seperate Establishment for the Dock & Repair section and its staff was also started.

This decentralization has substantiaally contributed to the over all efficiency of the Department.

In the case of Service boats, the departmental has began using modern steel/FRP boats instead of wooden boats.

The water transport wing of the K.S.R.T.C was taken over by this department,thereby achieving more expansion of the department.
