Kerala
has an excellent banking infrastructure. As on 31st March
2001 there were 49 Commercial Banks, 2 Regional Rural banks
(RRBs), 44 PCARDBs, 14 District Co-operative Banks and one
State Cooperative Bank together having 3813 branches well
spread over the State. Of these, 2956 are Commercial Bank
branches. In addition there are also 1593 Primary Agriculture
Credits Co-operatives in the State. The average population
covered by a bank comes to 5402 as against the national
average of 15,000. The increase in the number of banks took
place after the nationalisation in 1969 when the State had
only 516 branches.
