Whom do you approach to get water released through the Canal System of Irrigation Projects?

All the completed Irrigation Projects have an Operation and Maintenance Division which is headed by an Executive Engineer. The Executive Engineer in charge of the Operation and Maintenance Division may be contacted to get water released through the Canal system.

2. Is there any system for warning people before release of water through Dams/Canal system?

Yes, the Executive Engineer in charge of the Dam/Head Works will issue necessary warnings through Press/Media etc, well in advance about the opening of Dam shutters/Canal systems, warning the Public to take care, and not to allow people/cattle graze in river beds etc.

3. Who is to be informed in the case of a breach of a river or Costal erosion in beaches?

The Executive Engineer of Water Resource (Major Irrigation) Division is the officer to take immediate action in the case of a breach of a river or Costal erosion in beaches under his jurisdiction.

10. What is the difference between a Minor Irrigation Scheme, Medium Irrigation scheme and Major Irrigation scheme?

Minor Irrigation schemes are those benefiting on Irrigable command area of not more than 15 hectares.

Medium Irrigation Schemes are those with a cultivable area of 15 hectares or more, and not more than 10,000 hectares, including Lift Irrigation schemes.

Those schemes above 10,000 hectares are Major Irrigation schemes.

Those classifications are as per revised Kerala Irrigation and Water Conservation Act 2003, dated 18th September 2003.

11. Which Agency is the main provider of Loan Assistance to the Department?

National bank of Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) is providing loan assistance for Minor Irrigation works under Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) through Phases I to IX, since 1995.

12. What is the Outlay for Minor Irrigation in the 10th Plan?

Rs.155.00 Crores is the 10th Plan Outlay for Minor Irrigation.
