Medical Education


The Medical education in the state is imparted through five medical colleges, two dental colleges and three nursing colleges. The total annual intake of students for MBBS is 700 for BDS 80 and BScNursing 150.

            Thiruvananthapuram Medical College was the first one started in 1951 with an annual admission of 60 students. The annual admission was gradually increased and reached 200 in 1983. The second medical college was started at Calicut in 1957 with an annual intake of 50 students and the admission capacity was increased to 200. The third medical college was started in 1962 at Kottayam. The TD Medical College at Alappuzha  was started in the private sector in 1963 and the management was taken over by the government in 1969 for a period of 5 years. Subsequently in 1974 it became a full fledged government institution. The medical college at Thrissur was started in 1982. Medical College at Kottayam, Alleppey and Thrissur admit 100 students each fro MBBS course annually.
Post graduate courses in various specialities of medicine  and surgery have been  started in all medical colleges except that at Thrissur.

Dental College

            There are 2 dental colleges attached to medical college Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode in the state with annual admission of 40 students each. Dental college Thiruvananthapuram offers post graduate training facility.
Dental hygienists’  course was started in the dental college at Thiruvananthapuram  in 1963 but was discontinued in 1974. Dental mechanic course is conducted in both the dental colleges.

Nursing College

            There are 3 nursing colleges at Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam and Kozhikode. The total annual intake in 150 students for BSc Nursing and 90 students for general nursing. MSc  Nursing course is conducted in Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode with the total intake of 24 students in 5 specialites.

Pharmacy College

            There is a pharmacy college attached to Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram.  B Pharm and M Pharm  courses are conducted and the annual intake i 28 and 8 students respectively. One year diploma course in pharmacy is being conducted in Medical College Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, Kottayam and Alappuzha with a total annual intake capacity of 135 students.

Priyadarshini Institute of Para Medical Science

            A separate institute of paramedical sciences has been  started in the Medical College Thiruvananthapuram under special central assistance for SC/ST students certificate course in MLT, General Nursing, CRA, Dental mechanic and Ophthalmic assistants are being conducted in this institution in addition to certificate courses being conducted in all the 5 medical colleges.
  All the medical colleges are under the Directorate of Medical Education with the Director of Medical Education as the head of the department.
