INSURANCE MEDICAL SERVICE

The insured employees and their family members numbering about 5.2 lakhs in the state are provided out patient and in patient treatment through a network of ESI hospitals and full time ESI dispensaries by the Department of Insurance Medical Services. There are Homeo and Ayurvedic units attached to various ESI institutions. The insured persons are given specialised treatment in all ranges from ESI hospitals. A cancer detection unit is functioning at Udyogamandal in Ernakulam district. In cases where the insured persons require super specialised treatment like bypass surgery etc, such cases are referred to Sree Chitra Thirunal Medical Centre, Thiruvananthapuram and Christian Medical College, Vellore and the full medical expenses in this regard are met by the Department. In ESI hospitals and dispensaries, facilities are provided for sterilization, MTP and immunization. There are 13 ESI hospitals, 136 ESI dispensaries under the Department of Insurance Medical Services in Kerala. The total bed strength in these hospitals / dispensaries come to 1271 and the number of doctors, staff nurses and head nurses as on 8/97 is 544,245 and 109 respectively.
