Health Transport Organisation
The Health Transport Organisation is mainly designed to
carry out maintenance and repairs of vehicles for increasing
vehicle utilisation and enhancing reliability factor of
vehicles. In 1964, the organisation was reorganised into
an independent unit under the Director of Health Services
with a State Health Transport Officer. Subsequently with
the help of UNICEF the transport organisation was reorganised
and expanded to form health equipment management organisation.
For
maintenance and repairs of vehicles this organisation has
a central workshop at Thiruvananthapuram, Regional workshops
at Kozhikode and Thrissur and district static workshops
at the district head quarters. While servicing and minor
repairs are attended by the district static workshops concerned,
major repairs are done at central and regional workshops
subject to the technical feasibility. Whenever repairs are
not possible in the department workshops, vehicles are sent
to private workshops after getting administrative sanction
for each case. Bulk purchase of tyres, batteries, spare
parts etc. are done at the Directorate as per the rule subject
to availability of funds.
The
three hospital mobile units also function with head quarters
at Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam and Kozhikode and these
carry out maintenance and repairs of hospital equipments
by moving to various institutions within the zone allocated
to each.
