Welfare Measures/Schemes

1.  The Kerala Forest Department has opened retail timber outlets at Pathanapuram, (Kollam) Parampuzha, (Kottayam) Chalakudy, (Thrissur) Chaliyam (Kozhikode) and Walayar (Palakkad) from where the public can purchase quality timber without participating in usual timber auctions.

a.  Only II and III class Teak will be sold in retail depots.

b. A monthly quota of 100 cu.metres. of timber consisting of all classes  will be fixed for retail sale for each depot

c. Retail sale of timber will be made only for house construction purpose on production  of sufficient proof for the same.  A ceiling of 5 cu.metres is fixed for each applicant.

d.  1/10th  value of the timber selected, subject to a maximum of Rs. 20,000/(Rupees Twenty thousand only)  will be collected as part value in either cash or local Demand Draft immediately.

2.  Sand collection is allowed from Thenmala, Ranni and Thiruvananthapuram Forest Division according to the existing rules and regulations imposed by the Government of India and State Government.

3.  1281 ha.of area has been evicted from Mathikettan Shola and it has been declared as a National Park.

4.   Including Agasthyamala 1701 sq.km. area declared as Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve.

5.   As relief measure to farmers restrictions on the export of rubber wood to neighboring states relaxed.

6.   The Kerala Management and Maintenance of Captive Elephant Rules framed as a welfare measure for Elephant in Captivity.

7.   Obtained Central approval for diverting 7693.2257 ha. of Reserve Forest/Vested Forest land for the rehabilitation of landless tribals.

8.   Recruited 300 tribal Forest Guards including women.

9.   Distributed more than 50000 saplings during Sabarimala pilgrimage in association with NGOs and Public. Commenced ‘Poonkavanavandanam’ – a programme for the restoration of forest ecosystem in an around the core areas of Sabarimala shrine

10.  Started the programme ‘Gramavanam’ – planting for the creation of minimum one acre of mini forest in each gramapanchayat targeting 991 panchayats.

11.  Programme for educating public on the production of  seedlings and the usage of Medicinal plants with the assistance of National Medicinal Plants Board
