The
World Bank Aided, Kerala Forestry Project has been officially
launched at a workshop held at Government Guest House Thiruvananthapuram
on 20th August 1998. The integrated project has
a total outlay of Rs.183 crores and the project period is
four years. This project aims
(1) to promote Conservation of bio-diversity and arrest
the degradation of forest land
(2) to improve productivity of wood and non timber forest
produces from Forest and non-forest lands and (3) to improve
the living condition of local people residing in and around
forest area.
The
Department also prepared a Project Implementation Plan (PIP)
which is the basic document for implementation of the Project.
The project has three major components-
(i) Sector management
(ii) Forest management and
(iii) Biodiversity conservation.
The workshop was organized
(1) to explain the Kerala Forestry Project to the implementing
agencies and stake holders.
(2) to examine-agency co-operation arrangements, funding
requirement including budgetary resources, disbursement
of funds to the field officers and implementation arrangements
of different components of the project so as to achieve
project objectives and become eligible for a larger second
phase of the Project, (3) to examine monitoring and evaluation
arrangements of the Project components,
(4) to discuss and clarify Bank procurement, disbursement
and other procedures and
(5) to fine-tune the modalities for the implementation of
Kerala Forestry Project.
